Lara and Emerson Smith have been a part of Boys Team Charity’s North Valley Chapter since 2016. The organization, which provides boys philanthropic and leadership opportunities from seventh grade through high school, was a natural fit for the mother/son team.
“I volunteered throughout college and have always worked for organizations that place a priority on community service,” Lara said. “Fostering that same commitment with my son is important to me.”
One of the pair’s favorite organizations to volunteer with is Home ‘Fur’ Good, a top-ranked Valley shelter. Volunteering with the shelter typically consists of administrative help during the shelter’s low-cost vaccination clinic days, cleaning the shelter after hours, and playing with the dogs.
Then They Met Jack
Not only do Lara and Emerson volunteer with Home ‘Fur’ Good, but they have also expanded their own family with the adoption of Jack. The four-year-old Chihuahua mix charmed them with his peppy personality and is a great match for their nine-year-old Boxer rescue, Truman.
Making Life Better for Shelter Animals
In early March, Lara attended a meeting to launch a Random Acts of Kindness program at work. The program, which is a part of Desert Financial’s 2018 Year of Giving, enables employees to surprise an individual or Valley organization with a helping hand.
“I immediately thought of Home ‘Fur’ Good,” Lara said. “btc brought us to Home ‘Fur’ Good, which brought us to Jack. The shelter team does so much to ensure its animals have a clean, safe, and comfortable place until they find their permanent home. I wanted to use this opportunity to make a significant contribution.”
Desert Financial donated $7,500 to Home ‘Fur’ Good, which the shelter used to replace flooring and outfit one of the pet play areas with a bone-shaped bench. The Home ‘Fur’ Good team was “over the moon with your generosity and support!”
